Janice Allen

Janice AllenJanice Allen is Headteacher at Falinge Park High School in Rochdale. Falinge Park is an inclusive, multi-cultural, comprehensive which serves an area of high deprivation. There are over 40 languages spoken at the school. Janice joined Falinge in 2015 following 7 years as a Deputy Headteacher in Salford and Manchester. She represents Secondary Heads on the Local Safeguarding Board and sits on the Complex Safeguarding sub-group, a role which she is very passionate about and committed to.

Since 2015 the school has worked closely with external organisations such as the SSAT, Assessment Academy and Teacher Development Trust and joined the Alliance for Learning as a strategic partner in January 2019. It has a truly comprehensive intake.

The work on the curriculum and the mastery approach in Mathematics has been in development since 2016. At this time, leaders and classroom teachers across the school began the process of developing a curriculum which focused on the acquisition of knowledge and the application of subject specific skills. Alongside the taught curriculum the school provides opportunities for pupils comparable with those at the best private schools: public speaking, work with a wide range of industries, charity and community events and social action. Within the taught curriculum pupil groupings are mixed ability in Key Stage 3 and the Mathematics lead has shifted practice so that conceptual understanding is explicitly taught and practised. This has been a challenge when addressing the diversity of need within the classroom but is one that is supported through the culture of the school. The approach to professional learning, performance management, teaching and learning development and instructional coaching has enabled teachers to take these calculated risks in a supportive environment. The Director of Maths at Falinge is the Assistant Maths Hub Lead for the NW1 Maths Hub.


David Woolley

david woolleyDavid is an Assistant Headteacher at Cheadle Hulme High School with responsibility for mathematics. Cheadle Hulme High School is in the top 5% of schools in the country based on Progress 8. David is a Specialist Leader of Education in mathematics who is passionate about improving mathematics education across all phases.  He has worked in a variety of secondary settings across Greater Manchester as an AST, head of department and senior leader. David was part of the original team who established the North West One Maths Hub and in its formative years spent time as the Senior Lead and as Maths Lead.


Stephanie Habershon

Stephanie HabershonStephanie is Headteacher at Chorlton Park Primary School in Manchester.  She has been teaching for over 25 years and has worked at Chorlton Park as a class teacher, Maths Lead and now as Head of Early Years and Key Stage One.  Chorlton Park became a Teaching School in 2013 and is a Strategic Partner in the Manchester Teaching School Alliance.

In September 2014 she visited Shanghai as part of the National England-China Exchange Project looking at teaching for mastery.  Since then she has been instrumental in developing the approach throughout her school.


Sue Hough

Sue HoughSue is a senior lecturer in Mathematics education at Manchester Metropolitan University, after working in secondary schools for 18 years. She has managed a number of projects relating to the use of approaches based upon the Dutch approach called Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) in UK schools and is a co-author of the ‘Making Sense of Maths’ series of books. Sue has most recently led a Nuffield funded project studying the effect of using RME based approaches with Post 16 GCSE resit students.

Sue was one of the project developers for the DfE funded ‘Multiplicative Reasoning’ project and has run CPD relating to this for the NW1 Hub for various KS2 and KS3 cohorts of teachers. She is also leading on the Hub programme ‘Making Sense of Maths for Post 16 GCSE resit’.


Gaynor Bahan

Gaynor BahonGaynor is the NCETM Regional Lead for Lancashire and West Yorkshire. She acts as the principal link to the Maths Hub leadership and management teams in the region and works with key regional stakeholders and representatives of national government programmes supporting mathematics and STEM more widely.

Gaynor moved to NCETM in 2018 after working for 15 years in schools in a variety of roles. This included Head of Maths, Assistant Headteacher and Lead Practitioner through which she was able to contribute to strategic developments in whole-school teaching and learning, data/outcomes and timetabling and was a coach for both new and experienced teachers. She lectured in Mathematical Statistics to undergraduates at Edge Hill University and was an associate tutor on the PGCE Mathematics programme. She believes strongly that quality initial training then ongoing, research-based, professional development are vital in the retention of teachers of mathematics. She is passionate about closing the achievement gap between disadvantaged children and their peers and supports any initiatives that encourage more girls to continue with STEM-related subjects at Level 3 and beyond!


Julian Nicholls

Julian-1-copyJulian is the Headteacher of Trinity Church of England High School based on the University campus in the city of Manchester.  Julian’s career began in the North East of England, working in several high schools and then as an Advisory Teacher for Middlesbrough Local Authority working specifically in five secondary schools on raising attainment in Science. 

Appointed as the Director of Studies at Trinity in 2001, Julian has been influential in the development of Trinity through the last two decades, being part of the team who redesigned the building in 2010, became the first converter academy in 2011, achieved ‘outstanding’ school status in 2014 and opened a  new Sixth Form in September 2016.  In September 2017, Julian was appointed Head and is committed to Trinity playing a leading role in local and national collaborative arrangements, with Trinity taking a lead role in the Manchester area as a ‘teaching for mastery’ school.
