To develop Subject Knowledge for primary teachers to enable them to understand, teach and support pupils in mathematics in the classroom.
A key focus needs to be on not only improving the participants’ ability to “do” mathematics but also to ensure they have the appropriate pedagogical knowledge to teach their pupils well. Subject knowledge needs to be linked to pedagogy.
Teachers’ will develop their knowledge about mathematics and knowledge about the teaching of mathematics. In terms of the domains of mathematical knowledge there will be improvements in Common Content Knowledge and Specialized Content Knowledge. These will link to better pedagogy so that teachers are aware of how pupils learn and how to teach the content most effectively. Core content across all the Work Groups, supported by slides and guidance notes, will ensure consistency with the pedagogy associated with the Teaching for Mastery programme.
Teachers will develop enhanced mathematics subject knowledge with a particular emphasis on mathematical structures in key areas of mathematics.
Primary teaching colleagues who require or feel their mathematical subject knowledge could be improved or their confidence in mathematics needs to be consolidated by focussing heuristically on the topics in the curriculum and the pedagogy to facilitate.
